I’ve had a bit of a break from drawing over the past few months. Summer happened, so travelling, festivals, concerts, skateboarding, BBQs and all the other things that make it difficult to find a quiet moment to sit down with a piece of paper.

Drawing always pulls me back eventually, though.

I love details. I’m not particularly good at drawing them, but I love getting lost in them. A 0.1 mm liner is probably a little too much for me, but 0.2 mm feels just right. I can sit there and keep adding tiny lines for what feels like forever.

SeaMonkey, IRC and the Internet I miss

Lately I’ve been spending more time browsing Neocities and personal websites (tottaly love it), and somehow I ended up rediscovering SeaMonkey.

I really like this browser.

It is incredibly simple and fast, and when I’m browsing Neocities it somehow makes the whole experience feel different. I open a website and that’s it. I’m just looking at someone’s website. There is nothing between me and the page.

It reminds me of browsing the web in the late 90s and early 2000s, when a browser was just a browser and the internet still felt like a collection of places made by people.

A blog worth following

I stumbled across a blog recently that felt strangely familiar.

It’s called Richard Osgood, and after reading a few posts I realized that Rick seems to have a pretty similar way of thinking about the internet as I do.

I especially liked his post about RSS. I’ve tried RSS a few times myself and, just like Rick, it took me a while before it finally stuck.

These days I don’t follow that many feeds, but I really like having them there. I choose what I follow, and I stay in control of it.

How I found Pennywise... for life

I first heard Pennywise sometime in 2001.

I didn’t find them on the internet. I didn’t even have internet at home.

I found them in a video game.

The game was Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX.

I absolutely loved that game. Not just the game itself, but the soundtrack - Pennywise, Social Distortion, Deftones and so. I would sometimes leave the game running even when I wasn’t playing, just so the music could play in the background while I was in my room.

Welcome to Nexl

So, this is Nexl. I’m Nexl.

I’ve been thinking about making a personal website for a while, and eventually I ended up here, on Neocities. There is something strangely comforting about the idea of having a little corner of the internet that is just… mine.

I miss the old internet. Or at least the idea of it.

More than the way it looked, I miss the way people used it. You went online because you wanted to find something. You wanted to learn something, read someone’s thoughts, talk to people, find a weird little website about something you were interested in, or maybe just share something you’d made yourself.
